Trips from Shanghai
Discover day and weekend trips from Shanghai with scenic hikes, picturesque villages, and plenty of nature and culture to explore.

All over the place in Moganshan
Moganshan is technically a mountain within Moganshan national park, but here in Shanghai we usually refer to it as a broader area, full of bamboo forests, mountains, hills, nature and small villages. I’ll share some practical information and write from my own experience, based on the three places I’ve stayed in. If you want extensive information about everything Moganshan has to offer, I would recommend this page on SmartShanghai or this website, full of practical information

Zhouzhuang and Jinxi Water Towns
Practical information This is a perfect day trip from Shanghai. The drive is not particularly long, but I would recommend doing it by car. Even better is hiring a driver so you can enjoy the day. There is no need to stay overnight. Leave Shanghai in the morning, spend the day exploring, and drive back in the late afternoon or early evening. Zhouzhuang is the larger and more interesting of the two towns. We started there and spent most of our day exploring its canals, streets

Weekend in Beijing: hiking the Great Wall, and visiting the Summer Palace
Our itinerary and the hotel I'm going to do this blog a little differently from my other travel posts because there isn't all that much practical information I can add. I'll simply tell you how we got there, which hotel we booked, and which section of the Wall we visited. I do think our choice of section was an important one. On Friday, after work, we took the train from Hongqiao Station to Beijing. We arrived around 22:00 and checked into our hotel. We stayed in this small h

A few days in amazing Anji
Practical Information I have been to Anji three times and stayed twice at the same hotel. One thing I would recommend is choosing your accommodation and location carefully before you go. I have found that Anji offers both very popular hiking routes and much quieter, lesser-known trails. The more famous hikes can become particularly crowded on weekends and public holidays. Don't hesitate to ask your hotel host for recommendations, as they often know excellent routes that are n

West Hangzhou- Tea Plantations
Practical Information Hangzhou can easily be reached by train from Shanghai. Make sure you book your train tickets in advance. We booked only a week ahead. We took a car. Note that cars can not always go all the way to your hotel. Skip the organised tea plantation tours or guides. We booked one and wouldn’t recommend it. It’s better to do it yourself. Tours just take you there and allow you to pick for a while, often ending at tea farms where they try to sell you products. I
